How to find the best disability insurance?

For self-employed professionals, freelancers, and entrepreneurs, it’s important to choose a occupational disability insurance (called AOV for short in Dutch) that suits both your personal and business situation.

There can be significant differences between insurers in terms of coverage, premiums, conditions, and flexibility.

Think about rent, mortgage, groceries, and other expenses that still need to be paid, even if you become (partially) unable to work.

It could be smart to assess your situation. Use the questions below for this.

1. What are your fixed monthly expenses?

Your fixed expenses, such as rent or mortgage, groceries, and insurance – give an idea of the minimum amount you should insure.

2. How long can you go without an income?

If you have savings or other financial buffers, you can opt for a longer waiting period (e.g., 3 or 6 months) before the insurance kicks in. This significantly lowers your premium.

3. Do you want coverage for your own profession?

Disability insurance policies differ in how well they cover your own occupation. Also consider additional options like coverage for mental health issues and pregnancy.

What is and isn’t covered by disability insurance?

What is covered?

  • Disability due to physical or mental health issues
  • Disability resulting from activities at work, at home, on vacation, or during sports
  • Temporary inability to work due to pregnancy (depending on your policy)
  • Personalized guidance during the period you are unable to work

What isn’t covered?

  • When your disability cannot be appointed to a medical cause
  • If you are less than 25 percent occupationally disabled
  • If your disability is caused by addiction to alcohol or drugs
  • If your disability involves intent or reckless behavior

Is disability insurance compulsory?

As of this moment (May 2025), as a self-employed entrepreneur, it is not compulsory to take out disability insurance (AOV) in The Netherlands.

2027

However, the Dutch government is working on a plan for a mandatory basic disability insurance (BAZ) for self-employed individuals.

The introduction of this plan was originally scheduled for January 1st, 2027. However, this plan has been postponed because implementation proved unfeasible.

The mandatory disability insurance (AOV) for self-employed workers is expected to be introduced on January 1st, 2030.

What to expect for the compulsory AOV?

  • The obligation applies to all self-employed individuals who declare business profits to the Dutch Tax Administration.
  • The cost is approximately 6,5% of your income, with a maximum of 195 euros per month.
  • The compulsory insurance covers 70% your income, with a maximum of 100% of the minimum wage.
