€ 370For self-employed professionals, freelancers, and entrepreneurs, it’s important to choose a occupational disability insurance (called AOV for short in Dutch) that suits both your personal and business situation.
There can be significant differences between insurers in terms of coverage, premiums, conditions, and flexibility.
Think about rent, mortgage, groceries, and other expenses that still need to be paid, even if you become (partially) unable to work.
It could be smart to assess your situation. Use the questions below for this.
Your fixed expenses, such as rent or mortgage, groceries, and insurance – give an idea of the minimum amount you should insure.
If you have savings or other financial buffers, you can opt for a longer waiting period (e.g., 3 or 6 months) before the insurance kicks in. This significantly lowers your premium.
Disability insurance policies differ in how well they cover your own occupation. Also consider additional options like coverage for mental health issues and pregnancy.
As of this moment (May 2025), as a self-employed entrepreneur, it is not compulsory to take out disability insurance (AOV) in The Netherlands.
However, the Dutch government is working on a plan for a mandatory basic disability insurance (BAZ) for self-employed individuals.
The introduction of this plan was originally scheduled for January 1st, 2027. However, this plan has been postponed because implementation proved unfeasible.
The mandatory disability insurance (AOV) for self-employed workers is expected to be introduced on January 1st, 2030.
